Recommended books for Introduction to Mathematical Logic and Model Theory
I'm taking an introductory course in Mathematical Logic and Model Theory. The professor doesn't teach out of a book, instead provides only lecture notes. So, I'm looking for a good book to study from, any suggestions?

A reliable, friendly standard undergraduate text is Ebbinghaus, Flum and Thomas's Mathematics Logic. (link) It's always difficult learning a subject from two simultaneous sources, but this might have a good chance of working out.

Maybe try Dirk van Dalen, Logic and Structure. It's a good introductory book in this area, although not exactly easy. If you're focusing on model theory you could then follow that up with Wilfrid Hodges's A Shorter Model Theory. I do like Enderton's book as well, but it spends a lot of time going through some fairly heavy syntactic material that doesn't really need such detailed exposition.

In undergrad, I read a few different logic texts, although none of them did a lot with model theory, that's still a subject I'm hoping to getting around to learning eventually. My favorite was Leary's "A Friendly Introduction to Mathematical Logic", but it's out of print. Enderton is more thorough and would definitely be the best for a grad student among the ones I've read, but it's less friendly than Leary. Kaye's book had an interesting approach, but was riddled with errors. Since that was a while ago it might be much better now, although it's purely an introduction and doesn't get to incompleteness. Goldrei is a good expositor (his set theory books was one of the first math books I was ever able to read in full), but I'd only recommend over the others if you're not yet accustomed to theoretical math (ie lots of proofs).

My undergrad logic class used "A Tour Through Mathematical Logic" by Robert S. Wolf. It's out of print, but if you can track down a copy (maybe on Amazon), it's worth picking up. It really is a tour of the subject, with historical and biographical notes to accompany the mathematical content. I haven't read the chapter on Model Theory, but if it's like the rest of the book, it will be a good resource. The only downside to the book is that there are not that many exercises.

The book my logic class used was Enderton's Intro to Mathematical Logic. It was pretty good. If you give us a sample of the topics you cover, we might be able to give a better suggestion. Since logic is a bit less "standardized" than other areas of math in terms of standard course material, having a few books on hand is usually a good idea.

Free. Don't know much on the subject so I can't say if it's any good.
